Lithium batteries are a popular choice for applications such as digital cameras and other low-discharge rate consumer electronics due to their high energy density and long shelf life of 10 years. However, when used in devices such as high-intensity flashlights that have higher discharge rates, the cell may become overheated, creating dangerous conditions. Duracell’s re-settable current and Thermal Protection System is a great precautionary measure when it comes to lithium batteries in these types of devices. All ASP batteries come with the same Positive Thermal Coefficient (PTC) device and pressure relief vent for added safety. High discharge rate devices require PTC Lithium batteries to ensure safety. Otherwise, there may be an increased risk of explosives or hazardous conditions being created due to the high cell temperatures generated by the battery’s internal resistance limiting its power draw capabilities.
